Overview
Bi-fold doors are our founding service. Done well, they transform the back of an Essex home — opening 3m to 6m of glazing in a single sweep and dissolving the line between kitchen and garden. Done badly, they sag, drag, leak and seize within five years.
We fit leading aluminium systems exclusively because they're the systems that hold their geometry over a 20+ year service life. The threshold detailing, the bottom roller mechanism, and the perimeter weather-sealing are where bi-fold doors live or die — and these are the systems engineered to get all three right.
What goes wrong
The most common bi-fold failures we get called to: doors that drag along the bottom track within 2 years (caused by under-spec rollers and inadequate top-track support); air leakage at the meeting stiles in winter (caused by missing or compromised gasket detailing); and threshold pooling water in heavy rain (caused by flush-threshold installs without proper external drainage falls).
The recurring mistake we see homeowners make: choosing a budget aluminium system from a national supplier with deep discounts, fitted by a sub-contracted installer paid by the job. Looks fine on day one. Drags by year three. Needs full replacement by year seven. The right system fitted properly costs more upfront and saves the cost of a second install over the life of the home.
Process
01
Site visit, discussion of opening size, configuration (e.g. 3-pane stacking left, 4-pane split, 5-pane stacking right), threshold preference, and system recommendation.
02
Frame colour (any RAL), glass spec (acoustic, solar-control, low-iron), threshold type (rebated for weather, low-profile for accessibility), handle finish — all in writing.
03
5–7 weeks lead time on leading aluminium systems, 7–9 weeks on leading aluminium. Install dates confirmed when frames leave the factory.
04
Removal of existing doors/glazing, accurate fit using laser-levelled frame setting, threshold weather detail, and full operation test of every panel before sign-off.
05
Walk-around demo, hand-over of operation guide, Certass notification within 30 days, 10-year workmanship guarantee plus 10–25 year manufacturer warranty.
Benefits
Premium aluminium and premium aluminium bi-fold systems give 100mm fold-to-fold sightlines — significantly more glass area than older bi-fold systems.
Larger panes mean fewer panels for the same opening width. A 4m opening can run as 3 panels rather than 4 — better look, fewer hinges to maintain.
Multi-point shoot bolts on every leaf, internally beaded, laminated glass option on ground-floor installs — meets Secured by Design standard.
Triple-glazed option down to 0.9 W/m²K. Polyamide thermal break in every frame profile means cold doesn't conduct through the metal.
Brush gaskets, EPDM perimeter seals and properly designed thresholds. Tested against driving rain, not just calm-day weather.
Origin's frames are warranted for 20 years, Smart for 10. Powder-coat finish doesn't fade. Hardware (rollers, hinges, locks) lasts 15+ years before replacement.
In Detail
Premium aluminium 1000 (mid-market premium): our most-fitted system. 100mm sightlines, panes up to 1.2m × 2.5m, U-value from 1.4 W/m²K, 70mm frame depth. Available in any RAL. Strong all-round system at fair pricing.
premium aluminium bi-fold systems (premium with quick lead time): 49mm interlocking sightlines (slimmer than Smart), 20-year frame warranty, 4–6 week lead time vs 7+ on competitors, made in UK. Slightly higher cost but the premium choice for most contemporary projects.
leading premium systems (high-end architectural): ultra-slim sightlines, panes up to 1.2m × 3m, U-value down to 0.9 W/m²K with triple glazing. Used on architect-led and Passivhaus projects. Premium pricing.
Configurations: 2 panes (small openings up to 2.4m), 3 panes (most common, 2.4–3.6m openings), 4 panes (3.6–4.8m), 5–7 panes for very large openings. Stacking direction (left, right, split) determined by furniture layout.
Traffic door: a 'traffic door' (single-leaf swing operation) within the bi-fold set lets you pop in/out without folding the whole door. Highly recommended for kitchen-to-garden access.
Threshold options: rebated weather threshold (raised 70mm cill, best weather performance), low-profile threshold (15mm step, modern look, requires careful drainage detailing), flush threshold (genuinely zero step, suits accessible design but mandatory external falls and drainage).
Glass: 4-20-4 argon-filled is baseline. Solar-control essential on south-facing rear elevations. Acoustic laminated useful near busy roads. Low-iron glass (clearer, less green tint) is a premium upgrade for the most demanding aesthetics.
