Which bi-fold system is best?

For most Essex residential projects, Premium aluminium 1000 is the right balance of price, performance and lead time. For premium projects with shorter lead time and 20-year frame warranty, premium aluminium bi-fold systems is our recommendation. For architect-led or Passivhaus projects, leading premium systems is the high-end answer.

What's the maximum opening size for bi-folds?

Premium aluminium accommodates up to 7 panels and openings of 6m+. Origin and leading aluminium go larger still. Past 5–6m, structural lintel work in the property becomes the limiting factor rather than the bi-fold itself.

Should I get a flush threshold or a rebated threshold?

Rebated thresholds (raised 70mm cill) give the best weather performance and are our default recommendation for exposed back gardens. Flush thresholds (zero step) look amazing and suit accessible design, but require careful external drainage detailing — channel drains, falls away from the door, and ideally a covered/recessed location to avoid driving rain pooling at the threshold.

Can I have a single door for everyday use?

Yes — an integrated 'traffic door' within the bi-fold set works as a normal swing door for everyday access. We highly recommend this on kitchen-to-garden installs so you're not folding the whole door every time you nip out for the bins.

Are bi-fold doors secure?

Modern PAS24-certified bi-folds (Smart, Origin, leading aluminium all standard PAS24) have multi-point shoot bolts on every leaf, internally beaded glazing, and meet Secured by Design standard. Laminated glass on ground-floor installations adds further forced-entry resistance.

Will my bi-fold doors be draughty in winter?

Properly installed bi-folds with the right brush gaskets, EPDM perimeter seals and a rebated threshold are weathertight to PAS24 standard — no more draughty than a fixed window. Cheap installs with missing gaskets or poorly fitted thresholds can be very draughty. The system and the install both matter.

How long does bi-fold installation take?

Lead time from order is 5–7 weeks (Smart, Origin) or 7–9 weeks (leading aluminium). The on-site install itself is typically 1 day for a 3-panel set, 2 days for a 4–5 panel set, including removal of the existing structure.

Do bi-folds need maintenance?

Annual lubrication of the bottom rollers and hinge points (silicone spray, not oil) keeps operation smooth. The threshold drainage channel needs clearing of leaves twice a year. Otherwise, modern bi-folds are very low maintenance — no painting, no rotting, no warping.

premium aluminium bi-fold systems (premium with quick lead time): 49mm interlocking sightlines (slimmer than Smart), 20-year frame warranty, 4–6 week lead time vs 7+ on competitors, made in UK. Slightly higher cost but the premium choice for most contemporary projects.

leading premium systems (high-end architectural): ultra-slim sightlines, panes up to 1.2m × 3m, U-value down to 0.9 W/m²K with triple glazing. Used on architect-led and Passivhaus projects. Premium pricing.

Configurations: 2 panes (small openings up to 2.4m), 3 panes (most common, 2.4–3.6m openings), 4 panes (3.6–4.8m), 5–7 panes for very large openings. Stacking direction (left, right, split) determined by furniture layout.

Traffic door: a 'traffic door' (single-leaf swing operation) within the bi-fold set lets you pop in/out without folding the whole door. Highly recommended for kitchen-to-garden access.

Threshold options: rebated weather threshold (raised 70mm cill, best weather performance), low-profile threshold (15mm step, modern look, requires careful drainage detailing), flush threshold (genuinely zero step, suits accessible design but mandatory external falls and drainage).

Glass: 4-20-4 argon-filled is baseline. Solar-control essential on south-facing rear elevations. Acoustic laminated useful near busy roads. Low-iron glass (clearer, less green tint) is a premium upgrade for the most demanding aesthetics.
