What's the difference between sliding doors and bi-fold doors?

Sliding doors give you the largest unbroken panes of glass and the slimmest sightlines — but the panes don't fold away, so your maximum clear opening is around 50–66% of the total width. Bi-folds fold completely to one or both sides, giving close to 100% clear opening, but with more visible frame when closed. Sliders suit modern, view-led elevations; bi-folds suit indoor-outdoor living.

How wide can sliding doors be?

Premium aluminium slim-frame systems handle openings well over 6m using 3 or 4 pane configurations. Past 6m, structural lintel work in the property usually becomes the limiting factor rather than the door itself. We survey the structural opening before quoting.

Are sliding doors secure?

Modern PAS24-certified sliding doors have multi-point locking on the sliding leaf, anti-lift blocks to prevent the leaf being lifted off its track, and internally beaded glazing. Laminated glass on ground-floor installs adds further forced-entry resistance and meets Secured by Design standard.

Will a sliding door be draughty in winter?

Properly installed slim-frame sliders with the right brush gaskets and EPDM perimeter seals are weather-tight to PAS24 — no draughtier than a fixed window. Cheap installs with missing gaskets or poorly set thresholds can be very draughty. The system and the install both matter.

Can I have a flush threshold on a sliding door?

Yes, where the floor build-up allows it. A true flush threshold needs the floor zone to accommodate proper external drainage falls, a brush-sealed channel and ideally a covered or recessed location. We survey for this before quoting and tell you honestly if your build-up rules it out.

How long does sliding door installation take?

Lead time from order is typically 6–8 weeks on premium slim-frame systems. The on-site install itself is usually 1–2 days depending on opening size and removal of the existing structure. Larger 4-pane sets may need a third day for crane lift and final sign-off.

Do sliding doors need maintenance?

Annual lubrication of the bottom rollers (silicone spray, not oil) keeps operation smooth. The bottom track channel needs clearing of leaves and debris twice a year. Otherwise, modern aluminium sliders are very low maintenance — no painting, no rotting, no warping.

What goes wrong

Why cheap sliding doors stick, drag and leak within five years

The single biggest failure on sliding doors is the bottom roller. Budget systems use plastic or low-grade steel rollers carrying panes that can weigh 150kg+. Within three to five years they flat-spot, the door drags, and eventually the track itself wears. Replacement is invasive — often the whole door has to come out.

The second failure mode is the threshold. A flush sliding threshold without proper drainage falls and a brush-sealed channel will pool water in heavy rain — and that water tracks back inside. We install with stainless rollers rated for the pane weight, and we set the threshold with engineered drainage detailing. It's not the part of the install you see — it's the part that decides whether the door is still moving smoothly in fifteen years.

Configurations, track options, glass and threshold detail

2-pane configuration: one fixed pane, one sliding pane. The most common setup for openings 2.4–4m wide. Simple, reliable, and gives you a single large slider with a fixed picture pane alongside.

3-pane configuration: typically one fixed and two sliding (or two fixed, one sliding). Suits 3.6–5m openings and balances opening width with the cost of additional panes.

4-pane double-track: two panes per track, sliding past each other. Gives roughly 50% clear opening across the full width — ideal for 4.8m–6m+ openings where you want a generous through-flow.

Pocket doors: the sliding leaf disappears into a wall cavity for a 100% clear opening. Requires the cavity to be designed in at build stage — possible on new extensions, harder to retrofit.

Threshold: rebated weather threshold (best weather performance), low-profile (15mm step, modern look) or flush (zero step, requires careful external drainage). We survey the floor build-up before recommending.

Glass: 28mm sealed units standard with argon fill. Solar-control essential on south-facing rear elevations to manage summer heat. Acoustic laminated useful near busy roads. Low-iron glass eliminates the green tint on very large panes.
