How long does double glazing last?

A properly manufactured A-rated sealed unit with warm-edge spacers and argon fill typically holds its gas seal for 20–25 years. Budget units with aluminium spacers and no argon often blow within 8–10 years. Frame life on PVC is 25–30 years; on aluminium 30–40 years.

Can I just replace the glass in my existing frames?

If your frames are sound (no warping, intact seals, working hardware) we can replace just the sealed units. It's typically half the cost of full window replacement and takes a day on site for a whole house.

What's the difference between A and A+ rated double glazing?

Window Energy Rating (WER) is calculated from U-value, solar gain and air leakage. A is the baseline modern standard (U-value ~1.4 W/m²K). A+ adds solar gain optimisation and warm-edge spacers — typically a 10–15% energy improvement at small extra cost. We default to A+ unless you ask otherwise.

Is triple glazing worth it?

For most Essex homes, properly-spec'd double glazing with argon fill and warm-edge spacers is the right answer. Triple glazing adds genuine value on north-facing exposed elevations, in very cold microclimates, and where you're targeting Passivhaus or near-zero-energy performance. Otherwise the payback period is too long.

Will new double glazing cause condensation on my windows?

External condensation on cold mornings is actually a sign of high-performance glazing — the outer pane stays cold because so little heat is escaping through it. Internal condensation usually points to high room humidity, not the glass. We can advise on trickle vents and extraction.

Are your installs Certass registered?

Double Glazing done properly across Essex

Double glazing is two panes of glass sealed around a gas-filled cavity, set into a thermally-broken frame. The point is to slow the movement of heat from inside to outside in winter, and the movement of noise from outside to inside year-round.

What goes wrong

Why most 'cheap' double glazing fails within 10 years

The two failure modes we see constantly: blown units (visible misting between the panes, caused by seal failure that lets the argon out and moisture in), and frames that distort because they were under-reinforced for their size.

Both are usually traceable to a budget specification — single-seal units with aluminium spacer bars (which conduct cold straight through the frame edge), no argon fill (just air), and PVC profiles without internal steel. They look identical to a quality unit on day one. The difference shows in year five.

In Detail

What goes into an A-rated sealed unit (and why each part matters)

The two panes: standard is 4mm float glass on each face. The inner pane is usually low-emissivity (low-E) coated — a microscopic metallic layer that reflects radiant heat back into the room.

The cavity: 16mm or 20mm is the thermal sweet spot. Less than 12mm and you get conductive losses; more than 22mm and convection currents start to circulate inside the unit, undermining the insulation.

The gas fill: argon is the standard upgrade — 30% less conductive than air. Krypton fill is available for ultra-narrow cavities (often used in slimline units for listed buildings) but rarely justifies the extra cost in mainstream openings.

The spacer bar: warm-edge composite (Swisspacer Ultimate, Super Spacer) replaces traditional aluminium and dramatically reduces edge cold-bridging. Visible difference in winter condensation patterns.

Triple glazing: available on request. Worth it for north-facing rooms in exposed locations or when targeting Passivhaus-level performance.
